Training continues at the Avon Park Air Force Range today. Officials there say they will be hosting various sorties until very late tonight. The noise levels will continue to be high.
No word as to who is doing the testing of the facility, which continues to increase in use.
Tonight at 6:00, District 2 County Commissioner Don Elwell will host his regular town hall meeting for residents. That will be in the University Center at South Florida State College.
At issue there will be more focus on the county budget as well as other county issues. There will be pizza served before the session. That will commence at 5:30.
Earlier this morning, Highlands County commissioners met to discuss the budget for the upcoming 2023-24 fiscal year. They mulled over requests by county department heads and looked at the capital financial strategy for future building programs.
The School Board of Highlands County will meet in regular session this evening. They will be looking at several contractual agreements – including a pact with the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office to provide School Resource Deputies to the system.
In other action, the board will look at several issues regarding the Student Code of Conduct for the upcoming school year.
There were some tense moments in Lake Wales yesterday when a motorist hit a power pole. The mishap occurred at S.R. 60 near Deland Ave.
According to reports, the driver was stuck inside the vehicle for a time while power lines were removed from atop the car.
To complicate matters, a small grass fire started in some nearby vegetation.
Lakeland city officials want to hear what residents think of plans for downtown. They will be hosting a public forum today for the Downtown West Action Plan. The five-year plan calls for improvements to infrastructure, housing and economic development.
The meeting takes place from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the RP Funding Center in the Lake Hollingsworth Room in Lakeland.
