News Update for 9/8/23
Highlands County Sheriff’s detectives are seeking information to help solve a murder. They are looking for anyone who came in contact with Douglas Lieland, also known as “Slim,” between Monday Aug. 28 and Thursday Aug. 31.
Lieland was found inside his home on San Jose Avenue in the Lake Letta/Bonnett Lake area – south of Avon Park on the morning of Aug. 31, the victim of an apparent homicide.
Detectives are working to find his killer. Anyone who had contact with Lieland after August 28 is asked to call the Sheriff’s office, as they try to unravel the case.
A boil water notice remains in effect for the city of Avon Park, following a second water main break there. The first occurred yesterday, when crews apparently were clearing a lot near Lake Isis.
Now, officials say there has been a second rupture. Crews have been working all morning to remedy the problem.
Residents are urged to boil water used for drinking, food preparation, dish washing or other such purposes.
It’ll be a big day tomorrow, as members of NASGRASS hold a soft opening of their new racing faciltity at Florida Flywheelers Park. The lawn mower racing group had raced at their facility at the Avon Park airport for decades before being deposed earlier this year. The group has spent the last six months moving out and constructing the entirely new facility.
The new track is located at Florida Flywheeler’s Park on the Avon Park Cutoff Road. Gates will open tomorrow at noon for test & tune sessions. The first races will commence tomorrow evening at 6pm.
