A new report by the internet location RoadSnacks has ranked two Highlands County communities in the top five poorest cities in Florida. Avon Park was ranked at number four, with Sebring set at number five.
Those doing the survey reported they looked at Poverty Level, Median Household Income and Unemployment Rate among other things.
The City of Charm ranks as having the 7th lowest median household income and the 17th highest incidence of poverty in the state.
Sebring was cited as having the 8th lowest median income in the state.
The numbers came from census data from the latest American Community Survey.
Could Highlands County Commissioners move their meetings from Tuesday to Thursday? That’s an item that came up for discussion at the close of today’s meeting. The idea, first suggested by commissioner Christopher Campbell, met with a mixed reaction from the board.
Commissioners agreed to bring the matter back at a future meeting for a more formal discussion and input from citizens.
An attempt by Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies to pull over a stolen vehicle, led to a high-speed pursuit, a K-9 apprehension, two arrests and the recovery of the vehicle.
Arrested and charged were 22-year-old Alphonso Malik Young of Lake Placid and 23-year-old Jamal Antwoine Frasier of Lakeland.
The incident began when a Toyota Tundra that was reported stolen in Lakeland was spotted locally. Deputies attempted a traffic stop at Sun ‘n Lake of Sebring, but the pickup fled.
The truck eventually stopped in Highway Park, where the two occupants bailed out and ran. Young surrendered without incident, but K-9 Gentry was dispatched to get Fraizer. Both were taken to the Highlands County jail.
Hardee County Sheriff’s deputies are asking for the public’s assistance regarding a local Hit and Run crash. The accident occurred early yesterday off
Steve Roberts Special where a vehicle, apparently either a Ford Pickup or Van, struck and killed a 54-year-old Zolfo Springs man who was walking along the road.
Debris at the scene can be traced to a Forde F-series pickup or E-series van. Anyone with information is asked to call the Hardee County Sheriff’s office.
Two people were hurt in separate Polk County school bus crashes. Both happened yesterday morning less than three hours apart.
In one, a bus and car collided in Winter Haven at Winter Lake and Bradbury Road. One person was injured there. Over two dozen Lake Shipp Elementary School students were on the bus, but none of them were seriously hurt.
In the second incident, a bus and car collided at Holly Hill Cutoff Road and US 27. The 21-year-old Pinellas County woman driving the car suffered serious injuries. There were no students on the bus.
