News Update for 9/19/22

Weekend rains brought chaos to the area, causing power outages and washing out roads in Highlands and Hardee County. A number of throughfares are going to require significant work. Among those are Placid View Drive from Eagles Nest Drive to State Road 70, Golfview Drive is closed at West Lake Drive Blvd. and Lakeview Drive and Lakeview Road from Highlands Road to Bayview Road also suffered significant damage.
School officials adjusted bus routes to pick up students at their assigned stops – but the busses ran late due to the added length.
City and county officials will be out today to assess the damage, the length of time for repairs and the projected costs.

One person was killed and three others were seriously injured in a Saturday afternoon traffic accident south of Lake Placid. Florida Highway Patrol reports indicate a car driven by a Bradenton man was on State Road 70 and went left of center.
His car hit an oncoming pickup head-on. A woman in the car was killed. He, and both passengers in the truck were taken to hospitals in serious condition.
The mishap remains under investigation.

Highway 27 northbound was tied up west of Sebring Saturday when a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle near Whisper Circle. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a man, identified only as a 38-year-old resident of Humansville, Missouri, stepped in front of the oncoming sport utility vehicle and was struck and killed.
No charges have been filed in the mishap.

Sebring firefighters were called to a blaze on Nasturtium Avenue last night. The house was fully involved in flames as firefighters breached the door looking for occupants – there were none.
No injuries were reported in extinguishing the flames. No cause has been listed and no dollar damage estimate has been released.

Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies have found Gabriel Hall. The 20-year-old autistic man went missing from 4715 Darnell Drive in Sun ‘n Lake of Sebring. He was located safe,
He last seen had been seen at 3:25 this morning wearing a Gators jersey and jeans and riding a bright blue bicycle. They say Hall is “drawn toward water.”

A train collision is responsible for a mess in Polk County. Polk Fire Rescue says a train and a semi-truck collided in Lakeland near New Tampa Highway and Airport Road.
No one was hurt, but there was a mixture diesel and Pedialyte that spilled all over the highway. Traffic on Airport Road was stopped for the cleanup.
