News Update for 8/24/22
It was a wide span of election victories for local candidates in yesterday’s primary elections. The biggest margin was in the District 5 School Board race. Nicole Radonski cruised to a win over incumbent Jill Compton-Twist with 60-percent of the vote total.
Challenger Reece Martin also won his District four School Board race with a three percent margin of victory over incumbent Bill Brantley.
The closest race was that of Don Elwell, who edged incumbent Kathy Rapp by less than a percentage point to regain a Highlands County commission seat. It still was above the one-half of one percent that would have triggered an automatic recount.
In all, only 25-percent of the eligible voters here in Highlands County cast ballots. Most of them were by mail.
While yesterday’s elections seemed to go without a hitch, Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies were busy. They reportedly had to capture a man who ran from the scene of an accident at the intersection of Highway 27 and Sun ‘N Lake Blvd.
Deputies finally caught up with him near the entrance to Advent Hospital. Shortly thereafter, Florida Highway Patrol Troopers charged the unidentified driver.
South Florida State College interim vice president for academic affairs and student services Dr. Michele Heston, has earned an important appointment.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has named Heston to the Florida Center for Nursing Board of Directors.
She becomes one of 10 recent appointees from educational institutions that offer nursing programs and hospitals throughout Florida, including Tampa General Hospital and St. Petersburg College.
