News Update for 8/12/22

Early voting started yesterday here in Highlands County, and although thousands of mail-ins already have been received at the supervisor of elections office, only a few hundred showed up yesterday to cast their ballots in person.
To be exact, 301 people showed up at the three locations open in Avon Park, Lake Placid and Sebring.
This is a primary election, although it will be election day for a couple of local school board and one county commission seat.
Early voting runs through Saturday, August 20th. Election Day is Tuesday, August 23rd.

Highlands County School officials have released preliminary first day numbers for the local system. The bottom line shows 154 additional students are enrolled this year. The survey includes migrant pre-kindergarden children as well as teen parent’s babies.
Both high schools and elementary schools showed attendance increases this year, with fewer students listed in the county’s middle schools and virtual school.
Authorities say traditionally, it takes several weeks for all students to get into the system.
