News Update for 7/28/22

Preparations are underway in Lake Placid for the start of the 2022 edition of the Caladium Festival. It all begins tomorrow morning at 10:00 with opening ceremonies at the Stuart Park Gazebo. That will kick off three days of entertainment, arts and crafts booths, exhibits and displays – plus tours of the colorful caladium fields in and around Lake Placid.
There also will be live radio remotes on Highlands Radio stations Lite 105.7FM and 99.1FM WWOJ.

As the Avon Park city council looks to turn over the operation of their airport to a private company, it appears the facility is drawing increased attention. Both Duke Energy and The Florida Department of Emergency Management are seeking agreements to use the airport as a staging area, should a hurricane hit central Florida.
Apparently, the facility already is under site and safety certifications in preparation for the pact.
The Sebring Regional Airport performed a similar function during recovery efforts from Hurricane Irma.

If you are looking for information about some of the candidates in the upcoming August elections, the Champion for Children’s Circle Theatre will be the site of a debate this evening.
Slated to appear are school board candidates Nicole Radonski, Jill Compton-Twist, Isaac Durrance and Bill Brantly. Recce Martin, who also is in the race, was called out of town on business – but may submit a short video.
The event gets underway at 6pm at the Circle Theatre and is free.

Highlands County Sheriff’s officials have arrested a Lake Placid youth in connection with a robbery incident on Boeing St. Northwest. According to reports, the residents were robbed by a masked young man brandishing a knife and demanding cash.
Lawmen later found 17-year-old Deonte Chisolm , who after questioning, admitted to the crime. He has been charged with armed robbery, armed burglary and tampering with a witness.
