News Update for 7/27/22

Code Enforcement officers are cleaning up the city of Avon Park and it appears they are ahead of schedule. Code Enforcement Chief Randy Labelle told city council members his staff has issued 905 notices so far this year – with 130 of those coming this month alone.

They’re up 30-percent in productivity in their efforts and are picking up steam. One thing they’re doing is gathering in illegally placed signs – many of them are campaign signs for candidates in the upcoming primary.
Mayor Garrett Anderson congratulated the staff, saying the improvement already is noticeable.

Another tense meeting for the School Board of Highlands County last night. First, the board’s record retention policy was called into question by resident Jesse Sapp – who asked about the apparent erasure of a number of school board videos, where the topic of sex education in the schools was broached.
The board also was asked about state statutes that require oversight of classes by school personnel and administration.

The Visit Sebring Preview has been named the Preview of the Year by the American Junior Golf Association. They snagged the honor based on hospitality, charitable giving and its base of volunteers.
The event was staged last year at the Sun ‘N Lake golf course. Dozens of participants turned out for the inaugural event. No figures have been released as to the impact on the area by local tourism officials.

Last week, Sheriff Grady Judd celebrated 50 years in law enforcement in Imperial Polk County, this week, Sheriff Judd reportedly soon will be celebrating his golden wedding anniversary. The actual mark does not come until September – however, some festivities already reportedly are underway.
