A new survey shows that the Avon Park-Sebring metro area has registered one of the largest increases in mortgage loans since the coronavirus situation. The report from Support Network indicates locally, we have seen a 15.3-percent increase in mortgage applications. That’s higher than the national average of just nine percent.
However, the loan approval rate lags behind national numbers. The approval rate here was set at 70-percent, while the national average is said to he better than 86-percent.

As the controversy continues about burlesque shows in Sebring, Avon Park city council members tonight will take another step in regulating so-called adult businesses in the City of Charm. The first step has been to embrace the Highlands County ordinance.
They’ll take further action in cleaning up the city, as they hear the first reading of a solid waste ordinance. That measure will give the code enforcement department more teeth in the enforcement of littering and illegal dumping laws.
In other action, the council will look at the purchase of water meters to update the city’s utility system.

Another online scam has hit a local resident. A call to an area woman convinced her she was due some cash. She gave the caller access to her computer and her bank account – which he proceeded to empty. Highlands County Sheriff’s officials remind residents to NEVER give out personal information over the phone.

A Frostproof woman was struck and killed over the weekend in a crash just outside the Friendly City. Polk County Sheriff’s reports indicate 56-year-old Dawna McKenzie and a friend were walking along West Frostproof road, when she was hit by a pickup.

The driver of the truck, identified as 84-year-old Jose Quintana, also of Frostproof, reportedly stopped to render aid. McKenzie was taken to an area hospital, where she expired from her injuries.
The incident remains under investigation.
