News Update for 6/14/22
It’s mid-June and it appears it’s going to be warm for a while. Highlands County officials are urging residents to take caution, be safe and stay hydrated as the mercury continues to climb.
Among other suggestions they recommend wearing sunscreen, light & comfortable clothing and avoid outdoor activities during the heat of the day.
If you do have to be outside, they say, monitor signs for heat cramps, exhaustion and heat stroke. Temperatures are forecast into the mid 90s with a heat index of better than 100 over the next few days.
After the brouhaha involving burlesque shows in downtown Sebring, Avon Park city council members last night took the first step in keeping such shows out of the City of Charm. Without comment, the council adopted Highlands County’s ordinance on sexually oriented businesses and instructed attorney Gerald Burh to look at more comprehensive measures.
Buhr said the city could adopt the county ordinance without the usual two-week process of first and second readings.
There has been a pushback against so-called lingerie shows at restaurants and bars in downtown Sebring.
The Highlands County Tea Party will continue their series of presenting candidates for upcoming local political races when they get together this evening.
Highlands County Commissioner Arlene Tuck is slated to give an update on current county issues and will take questions for those in attendance.
Over the next few weeks, the Tea Party will have candidates for the Highlands County Commission, the Highlands County School Board, plus candidates in statewide races.
They meet Tuesday evenings at the Vietnam Veterans Hall, 33565 Grand Prix Drive – behind the Sebring Wal-Mart. The meetings commence at 6pm.
A Frostproof woman has been arrested in connection with a stabbing incident. iris Johnson has been charged with four counts of attempted first degree murder in the stabbing of four people at a Fort Meade Road residence during an altercation.
The four victims were transported to an area hospital. Johnson was taken to the Polk County jail.
