News Update for 5/25/23

Avon Park city council members will gather for a special meeting this evening. They again will take a look at the possibility of revamping Main Street. The plan, presented by Renaissance Planning already has had a couple of hearings.
Among other things, it involves reverse angle parking, chicanes and the narrowing of the roadway to slow traffic.
It’s part of a resurfacing, restoration and rehabilitation program planned by the Florida Department of Transportation for State Road 17.
Council members are expected to take public input before making a final decision. The session will get underway tonight at 6pm.

Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies have made an arrest in connection with last week’s break-in at the Hill-Gustat Middle School. A review o f surveillance footage led detectives to 47-year-old Joseph Thomas Dunihue jr.
Deputies raided Dunihue’s Sebring hotel room. There they found laptop computers and other equipment. Also discovered were drugs and a firearm. Dunihue was charged with numerous counts and taken to the Highlands County jail.

Lake Wales police still are on the lookout for a driver involved in a deadly crash in Highway 27 in the Crown Jewel of the Ridge.
They have issued an arrest warrant for Haines City’s Aljerune Brooks. The 40-year-old was allegedly drunk and speeding when he ran a red light and hit a semi-truck two weeks ago.
Two Haines City residents in Brooks’ car were killed. Anyone who knows Brooks’ whereabouts is asked to contact police.
