News Update for 5/18/22

A new study shows that over the past decade, the Sebring-Avon Park metro area experienced an 11-percent increase in per capita income – which apparently is not keeping pace with inflation.

Inflation has caused incomes to struggle to keep up with the declining buying power of the dollar. In fact, the local numbers represent less than half the national average, where incomes have increased an average of 25-percent.
In real numbers – local wages have increased a total of $4100 over the past decade, while they have increased an average of $12,000 on a national level during that same time period.

An unauthorized burn had Highlands County firefighters working yesterday. Units from West Sebring responded to the call off Memorial Drive and quickly put it out.
Florida Forest Service officials list Highlands, Hardee, Desoto and Okeechobee counties at a “Very High” level of fire danger. Although no Red Flag Warnings have been issued here – authorities are cautioning people to be careful with combustibles and outside burning.

Today is International Museum Day and four different facilities will be taking part. The Childrens’ Museum of the Highlands in Sebring will be offering tours every hour on the hour from noon-till-three. They’ll also be giving out free play passes.
The Highlands County Museum of Art and Culture on the South Florida State College Campus will have their last show of the season on display from 12:30-4:30 this afternoon.
The Peter Powell Roberts Museum in Avon Park will have extended hours from 10am – 4pm with guided tours of the museum at the Avon Park Community Center.
The Civillian Conservation Corps Museum at Highlands Hammock State Park will offer a special presentation this evening at 6:30 o artist Charles R. Knight.
In all, there are seven museum facilities in Highlands County

Highlands County commissioners yesterday approved a measure that will allow them to move forward with the sale of some 83 surplus properties. The action reportedly will add nearly $354,000 to the county coffers and put the lots back on the tax rolls.
Commissioners pulled a request that would have allowed the county administrator to have the ability to draft and sign letters of support for economic development projects. Reportedly, they will take up the issue at a future date.
