News Update for 5/17/22
Highlands County might be a very different place – if cows could vote. A new report by the United States Department of Agriculture shows there are some 115,000 head of cattle being run here – which is more than the entire human population of Highlands County.
In fact, Highlands is second in Florida only to Okeechobee, where they boast 165,000 head of cattle there.
Highlands County commissioners will look at the dispensation of nearly 20-million dollars in American Rescue Plan monies from the federal government when they meet this morning in regular session. More than 20 different cost centers have been identified for the cash – including a proposed $5-million dollar hurricane shelter project and $4.5-million dollars for the county’s planned broadband project.
In other action, commissioners will be asked to OK a provision that will give the county administrator the power to draft and sign letters of support for economic development projects.
It was a semi-truck and not a plane that burned yesterday out by the Sebring International Raceway. Units from Desoto City and Lorida were dispatched to the scene off Heywood Taylor Boulevard where they found the cab fully involved in flames.
There were no injuries reported. Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Lake Placid police report that Rusty the Pig has been found and returned to the owners of the Smoke Shack restaurant. The giant pig-shaped steel barbecue grill was taken from the property after the eatery burned to the ground this past March.
I was located in Miami. Owners say it was their mascot and one of the last vestiges of the place. It has since been returned – none the worse for wear.
Smoke Shack owners say they have a plan to rebuild.
