News Update for 4/29/22

Spring has sprung and reports now are coming from throughout the area as to the beginning of Love Bug Season. There’s no telling on how bad this year’s infestation might be, however, some are hopeful it might be light due to the recent dry conditions here.
The good thing is that they don’t bite, the bad thing is they can get everywhere – and cause people to wash their cars a LOT – inasmuch as their leavings can take the paint off vehicles.

Today is the last day for anyone who wants a chance to serve on a committee to direct sex education in Highlands County. The former program – The iMAD -or I Make a Difference Program- was not renewed after parental complaints about what was being taught to students.
Highlands County Superintendence of Schools Brenda Longshore will hand-pick members of the committee that now will look at a new curriculum for students.
Applications are available on the Highlands County School Board’s website.

The transition is underway as officials of Florida Airport Management are taking over the operation of the Avon Park Airport. Avon Park City Manager Mark Schrader says the contract has been signed and FAM now is responsible for the management, operation and routine maintenance at the facility.
Currently they are doing security checks, taking over leases and running fueling operations. Schrader says it’s still the city’s airport and council still has oversight on how the operation is run.

Competitors have started to arrive for the Liqui Moli Pro Watercross Nationals to be held this weekend on Avon Park’s Lake Verona. More than 100 racers and machines are expected in for the series’ season opener.
The event kicks off tomorrow and is free to the public, with parking in and around Donaldson Park. The pros are set to run Saturday, with Sunday set for amateur competition.

DUMPSTER FIRE

There was a dumpster fire in Venus yesterday – this was not the regular governmental kind, but an actual blaze. Apparently it started while crews were welding the side of the big container.
Units from Placid Lakes and Sun ‘N Lake South turned out to put it out. No injuries were reported.
