Main Street in Avon Park may be losing a couple of lanes. City Manager Mark Schrader told Avon Park city council members that the artery could go from four lanes to two lanes. Florida Department of Transportation officials reportedly started the discussion, asking about converting one of the current traffic lanes to a bicycle lane.
Council members said going to that configuration, with angle parking, could provide more spaces for shoppers in the City of Charm.
FDOT officials said they would put together a draft proposal for study.

A couple of Polk County men are in custody after an incident near Sebring. Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies responded to an orange grove off Payne Road, after a concerned citizen called about suspicious activity during the early morning hours.
Their investigation led them to a Ford F-150, containing 26-year-old Romerio Walker II and 22-year-old Eldred Kellum. In the back of the truck was a Yamaha 200 outboard motor.
A subsequent investigation led deputies to a boat in the grove, that had no motor. The owner of the craft told lawmen the boat had been stolen, and that motor actually had been part of the rig.
The two were charged with numerous counts and taken to the Highlands County jail.

Hurricane season has come and gone. Now local safety service officials are telling home owners it’s time to take the boards off the windows. Fire codes require houses to have a safe means of escape in the event of fire or other emergency.
Having an available window can give people a way out, especially in bedrooms.

A new survey by InsureMyTrip has listed the top 100 festive cities for holiday travel. While Florida cities like Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa made the Top 5, sadly, Sebring, Avon Park and Lake Placid did not make the list.
Ranking near the bottom were Sunshine State locations such as Sanford at 93, Key West at 97 and Punta Gorda at 98. The survey was based on: number of Christmas markets, holiday events, festive tours, the chance of snow, and number of searches for ‘Christmas in …’.

A pedestrian was killed near Lake Wales last night when they were hit by a vehicle. The accident occurred on Highway 60 near the intersection of Capps Road across from the Y’all Come Back Saloon.

A teenager wanted for murder in Pennsylvania is in custody in Polk County. Seventeen-year-old Henry Madera, Jr. was arrested at Mulberry High School where he has been a student for two months.
He was wanted for a shooting in Pennsylvania that left one person dead.
Madera is facing charges that include third-degree murder, and he’s awaiting extradition.
