An early morning traffic accident south of Sebring reportedly has claimed a life. Florida Highway Patrol officials say a 62-year-old Lake Placid woman died, when her sport utility vehicle was hit from behind by a semi tractor-trailer rig.
Florida Highway Patrol officials say the car was stopped at a traffic light at Highway 27 and US 98 when she was rear-ended by the big rig. The Lake Placid woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Highway 98 was closed for several hours while a homicide investigation took place.
Avon Park city council members have gotten in under the wire, passing a resolution that would allow them to impose an assessment on local residences and businesses to establish a stormwater utility in the City of Charm.
Consultants compared the fee to the city’s fire assessment, with the money to go to treating runoff water. The resolution is non-binding, any further action may be taken in 2024.
Highlands County Sheriff’s officials have announced that their confidential TIPS line now has a new number. Those who want to give information to law enforcement about crime, but remain anonymous, now can call 1-800-400-TIPS, that’s 1-800-400-8477,
There also is a P3TIPS app, that can be downloaded onto a smart phone.
Authorities remind users that they always will remain anonymous no matter how tips are submitted. The information then will be forwarded to law enforcement for follow up.
If an arrest is made based on an individual’s tip, they will be eligible for a cash reward of up to $9,500.
