News Update for 11/28/22
The local Christmas season gets underway officially this evening in Avon Park, with the annual Christmas parade. Staged by the Avon Park Chamber of Commerce, it is the first of the three holiday processionals here.
More than 60 units, including floats, dancers, bands and antique cars. will head down Main Street beginning at 7pm. It all will be led by Avon Park Mayor Garrett Anderson and Vice Mayor Jim Barnard.
Avon Park Chamber Executive Director George Karos says it’ll be the longest processonal in several years.
Prior to the parade, the second annual Gazebo lighting will occur, That’ll feature Christmas music and photos with The Grinch. Those festivities will commence at 5pm with the lighting to occur at 6:30.
Officials from the Highlands County Tourist Development Council have announced another employee designated to help bring visitors here. Reagan Fultz has been signed on as the county’s new Tourism Coordinator.
The Sebring native now will assist Tourism Consultant Casey Wohl in coordinating tourist development duties – including; administrative responsibilities, working with marketers & the public, and administering tourism grants.
A woman is dead after a test drive turned tragic in Winter Haven. Polk County sheriff’s officials say 86-year-old Clifford Worme was test-driving a Nissan Rogue SUV Saturday when he collided with another car outside the Hill Nissan Dealership.
Davenport’s Jean Worme was in the passenger seat of the SUV. Deputies say the 76-year-old died at the scene. Cliford suffered minor injuries, and the salesperson in the back seat was not hurt.
The driver of the other car also avoided injury. Investigators say everyone was buckled up.
