News Update for 1/8/24

It looks to be a fairly quiet meeting for the Avon Park city council tonight. Among other things, they will transfer responsibliities for renting the community center to the Heartland Cultural Alliance, will look at changing zoning for a couple acres on Green Street, and a planned unit development on Central Avenue.
The Council also will be asked for road closures for the upcoming Blueberry Festival and hear the first reading of a measure providing for health insurance for the council.

New Frostproof Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Amanda Bryant will get her first official appearance before the Frostproof city council tonight. She’ll be asking for road closures to permit the 22nd Annual Orange Blossom Festival and Classic Car Show in the Friendly City.
That’ll be coming up in February.

Traffic on State Road 64 in the small Hardee County community of Ona is snarled this morning. Reportedly a Semi truck and a car collided at the flashing light near the railroad tracks.
Early reports indicate it may have been a fatal traffic crash.

The Avon Park Depot Museum is planning a celebrity baseball game to help raise funds for their planned baseball museum. Organizers say they now are in search of celebrities who want to suit up for the January 20th competition.
so far, Avon Park native Thomas “Flash” Gordon and car dealer Bill Jarrett have signed up for the game, which is designed to be a re-creation of the April 1932 match-up between the St. Louis Cardinals and the House of David during spring training.
