News Update for 05/17/24
The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to an Avon Park home last night at approximately 8:30pm in regards to a suspicious incident. Upon arrival to the home on Joe Hilton street, deputies found two victims, a female and male, both 69 years old, with serious injuries. According to the male victim, the suspect, Lindsey Glenn, a 62-year-old male, was deceased inside the home. Glenn reportedly tricked the victims to gain entry into the residence. After entry, Glen pulled out a firearm and shot the female victim in the face. The male victim then armed himself with a 7- inch garden knife and defended himself and his wife against the suspect, ultimately resulting in Glenn’s death. Glenn was deceased by the time officers arrived. The male victim was treated for his injuries and released. The female victim has been listed in stable condition.
The Sebring Police Department was dispatched to the scene of a vehicle crash early this morning in the location of US HWY 27 N and Bayview Street. Current reports say that the Northbound lanes of US HWY 27 N will be closed for several hours while an investigation is conducted. Motorists are asked to avoid this area and find an alternate route.
The Florida Forest Service is advising caution regarding residual smoke from the Bluebird Fire in Lake Placid. The 318-acre fire which occurred May 14th, will be causing heavy smoke around Lake Josephine Drive, Orange Blossom Blvd, State Road 66, and Miller Avenue. They ask that residents stay alert in these areas, especially during the early morning hours. Florida Forest Service personnel will be actively working on the fire throughout the coming days. Any smoke in the area does not need to be reported.
On Monday evening, council members of the Lake Placid Community Redevelopment Agency suggested adding two community members to create a seven member CRA board. Currently the Lake Placid CRA is made up of the four town council members and the mayor. It was suggested the council create an application form for prospective members. The council has agreed to finalize the qualifications for new CRA board members, and other details before expanding the board.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a Lakeland man who has been missing in North Lakeland since May 7, a sheriff’s spokeswoman confirmed. Ethan Fussell, a 21-year old male, was last seen in the Driggers Road area north of Lakeland after leaving a friend’s house. He is 5 feet, 7 inches and about 150 pounds with brown hair and eyes. Members of the online crime-watch groups say a heavy police presence has been seen in the Driggers Road area and that detectives were going door to door on Mother’s Day to try to find him. Reportedly the Sheriff’s Office is still seeking tips.
