News Update 9/2/22

It’s happened again. Officials from the city of Sebring have announced that Harder Hall has been sold. Sebring City Administrator Scott Noethlic reported the Blackmon Family of St. Petersburg has acquired the big pink hotel on the shores of Little Lake Jackson. No purchase price was revealed.
Family officials say they have deep ties with the city on the Circle as far back as the 1960s, and have experience working with historic properties.
Their plans for the hotel, which has been vacant for better than three decades, is to restore it as a luxury waterfront resort.

September is Attendance Awareness Month, and Avon Park city council members will be keeping an eye on their Planning & Zoning board. Council members have had one resignation and are asking another board member to step down – mainly because he has not showed up for meetings.
In their place the council has tapped architect Eric Marshal and realtor Daniel Sauls to fill the slots. Council members agreed that other members who do not attend meetings also will be replaced.
The hope is that they will get citizens to attend the meetings, and a planning & zoning board that is predisposed to development in the City of Charm.

Following a workshop this week, it appears the Highlands County school board will be adhering more to state statutes when a new sex ed curriculum is adopted. Florida law calls for abstinence as the expected norm. Over the past six years the iMAD program -administered under Heartland Rural Health Network- taught sexual risk reduction.
They then allegedly put in unapproved content before their contract was not renewed. Four members of the school board met for a workshop this week to mull over the matter. Chairman Issac Durrance was not in attendance.

The Highlands County Clerk of Courts office has earned a number of awards. The Civil Division picked up a pair of Best Practice Excellence certificates, while both the Recording Division and the Public Records Division was awarded best Practice Awards.
The honorariums were presented to Highlands County Clerk of the Courts Jerome Kasuboski at the Florida Clerk of Courts and Comptroller’s Summer Conference.
