News Update 5/30/23
South Florida State College presidential finalist Fred Hawkins reportedly will start a two-day visit at the school today. On his schedule are a tour of the district, including the Highlands, Hardee and Desoto campuses. Hawkins also will stop by the Lake Placid Center as well as the Hotel Jacaranda.
This afternoon at 4:00 Hawkins will have a community reception where he’ll meet with the search committee, foundation members, alumni, legislators, community leaders and the general public.
That’ll be at the Alan Jay Center for the Performing Arts.
A meeting by the District Board of Trustees will be held next Wednesday to select a new SFSC President.
Sebring Firefighters were busy overnight. They were called to a blaze on Nasturtium Avenue. According to reports, the structure was fully involved in flames when units arrived at the scene. Apparently the three occupants of the house got out without injury.
Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Well, summertime is right around the corner and you may think that it gets pretty hot here. However, a new climatological study by Slacker, shows Highlands County’s not that bad. In fact, on the list of the top 25 hottest counties in Florida, Highlands ranks 25th. The survey shows the average temperature from June to August is 83-degrees here.
Okeechobee was 24th, Hardee was 22nd, and Polk County was 3rd on the list. Top Honors went to Pinellas County with an average of 84 degrees over the time period.
