Today begins early voting in Highlands County. Polls open at 8:30 this morning and will run until 4:30 this afternoon for the next 10 days.
In Avon Park voters in the City of Charm can go to the council chambers behind city hall. Those in the Caladium Capital can cast their ballots at the Lake Placid Town Government Center on Highway. 27 North.
In Sebring, voters can use the newly re-named Penny Ogg Operations Center on Kenilworth Blvd. Thousands of mail-in votes already have been received.
Election Day will be Tuesday, August 23.

Yesterday was the first day of classes for students in Highlands County for the 2022-23 academic year. They’re doing it again today – and will continue to the end of the school year next May.
School officials say it went without a hitch, and soon could be releasing preliminary attendance figures.
Prognosticators have said they believe there might be a couple hundred new students this time around.

Lake Wales city commissioners have approved revisions to the City’s code of ordnances that now broaden rules and regulations for a home-based business.
The new measure expands which businesses are considered “home-based” in an area zoned for residential use.
City officials say will provide more flexibility for those operating a home-based business.

A Polk County man credits his rescue training for helping a woman in distress. Maurice Dionne was home yesterday morning in Lakeland at the Sand Piper Golf and Country Club when a woman drove her SUV into a nearby pool.
Dionne ran to the scene, jumped in and with the help of a neighbor, freed the woman. He said the rescue brought him back to when he was 22 and in the Coast Guard.
Apparently, the driver was not seriously injured in the incident.
