If you’ve missed using Heron Street as a north-south route down Sebring’s west side for most of this year, relief is on the way – the County’s Road and Bridge Department says the rebuilding project that’s had the road closed since spring will be finished ahead of schedule – this week. Finishing up the striping on the newly rebuilt road takes place today, and – weather permitting – the road’s expected to reopen to traffic before close of business. There will be spot work left – driveway accesses and drainage work, by the way, so keep an eye open for temporary lane closures.
If your gut tells you there are more people in town lately, there’s a few more kids, too. Highlands County Public Schools showed a modest increase in enrollment in the first week of the school year. First-day enrollment in local K-12 schools was up to 11, 265 – an increase of 33 from last year’s first-day count. The old Kindergarten Learning Center is now the Sebring Pre-K Center – it opened with 160 kids in-house.
Early voting continues in advance of next Tuesday’s August 23rd primary election for statewide offices, and a few finals for County offices without partisan opponents. Polls will be open through this Saturday, August 20 at the Supervisor of Elections Operations Center on Kenilworth south of Sebring high School, at Avon Park City Council Chambers on East Pine Street, and at the Lake Placid Town Government Center on Highway 27 North. Don’t forget your ID. As of last night, the office reported a little over 11% of eligible County voters had cast ballots already between mail in and early voting processes.
Sebring’s Planning and Zoning Board gave approval last week to a proposed 275-unit apartment development on the north side of the Sebring Parkway – the four-story units would occupy a 15.7 acre parcel owned by a developer out of New York. A portion of the land is already zoned for multi-family housing – final approval will come before the City Council at its meeting tomorrow.
